I was doing some media research at my favorite site, which is very reputable, the Middle East Media Research institute. I came across an intresting analysis of the cartoon Tom and Jerry by an Iranian professor. I especially like the fact that he calls the Disney Company a Jewish company, I distinctly rember Walt being a real Jew lover plus I am almost certain Tom and Jerry wern't a Disney cartoon. I still think he's on to something though.

I'm not in love with the modern world
I really wanted to see Domino since it came out on video. This week I decided I was going to put the effort in and go rent it. I went Saturday afternoon, big mistake. I went to Roger's they had like 10 copies, all out. I took it in stride. I went to Blockbuster, they had a wall full and there was none in. Rage overwhelmed me. How could a movie this hated by critics be all out? I was so pissed, I went back to blockbuster on Sunday when all the copies should have been back in and they were still out. So I rented Todd Solondz's "Palindromes" to cheer me up; it was a movie about pedophilia, abortion, child murder and the overall depression associated with life. The main reason I wanted to rent Domino was the fact that it has Keira Knightley, Mickey Rourke, Tom Waits and Christopher Walken are in it, plus it supposed to be all flash.

Tidbits
So, apparently there is a sign of a greater power in the universe, by this I mean the fact that Johnny Marr is working with Modest Mouse on their new album.
What the heck is up with the United States, people outside of Iraq are getting shot because of Dick Cheney?
Also it looks like Death Cab for Cutie came up with a great idea for a new video… by stealing it from Peter Gabriel’s “Sledge Hammer” video.

It just ends up dribble...
Is it just me or are the Harlem Globetrotters essentially the evolution of the minstrel show. Instead of music, the skill focused on is basketball. They combine basketball skills with goofy hi-jinks, through use of black characters. This becomes a way of characterizing black people as good at basketball and unthreatening through their goofiness. Providing a lens through which white people can see black people in a politically correct and non-intimidating way. It just seems slightly racist to me stereotyping them as skilled buffoons somehow lower than white folk.

CD LINER HELL! Vol. 2
Black Francis (the Pixies): In regards to the song entitled Bailey's Walk, off their "complete B-Sides" Disk
"One of my Favorites, It's about a guy I used to see all over San Juan. He could only take a couple steps before he had to tap himself on the head and do a little spin. Once a photographer tried to take his picture, but Bailey wouldn't let him. "Normal" people sometimes forget that street people have pride and dignity too."

This weeks Fatwa: No monkey business
Today I heard the most sacrilegious and offensive sound on the American media Channel Much Music. What was the sound you ask? It was that of the Black Eyed Peas adding vocals to the righteous sermon of Dick Dale's "Misirlou." Alas, I have been lenient with their blasphemy and buffoonery for far too long. No longer will I tolerate these humps against my beliefs and religious zeal.
Therefore, the Black Eyed Peas, which are against Islam, the Prophet and the Qu'ran, are sentenced to death. I ask all Muslims to execute them wherever they find them.
God loves his children, yeah!P.S. Happy Valentines Day to all Yankee Infedels! May you engage in the appropriate amount heterosexual church approved sexual intercourse with your spouse. May I remind you it should be for reproductive purposes only!

Chad Van Gaalen

I’ve delayed this post for far, far too long. My story of finding out about Mr. Van Gaalen is almost as sporadic as his music.
Anyway, I was listening to an online music station that was centered out of Chicago during one of my more desperate moments of paper writing last semester. During this period I was convinced that making a list of all these great songs, was more beneficial than actually completing this report.
Anyway, by the end I had a list compiled of about 10 great songs, yet I still didn’t write down the address of the station and it is forever lost to me, like a one off phantasm, kinda. So, I decided to borrow some of these songs using LimeWire, and the only one that I found was “Clinically Dead” by Van Gaalen. I liked the song and later that week I saw the video on the Wedge, Chad himself had even done all the animation.
Anyway, it kinda slipped out of my mind during exam week. After the exams I was gift shopping at HMV and I saw the Chad’s CD which was out of place when I was looking for the new McCartney CD (gift for my Mom). You think I would buy it then but no, I would never pay $30 for a CD period, no matter how “animated” it was. After a while I was looking up some local talent because the concert scene was dry, and some chick I was seeing wanted to go to a concert, I came across the familiar name of Chad Van Gaalen. I though what the fuck; he’s from Calgary, I read on, he used to busk in the streets of Calgary? Ahhh shit. So I now had to buy the CD.
Anyway what is my verdict, eclectic, very eclectic. They truly are gems but gems that only shine when your in bed at night and devoting your entire attention to it. I was originally pissed about some of the cheesy lyrics but when you actually notice how they work to accent the direction of the music, it’s fucking crazy. What is it like? This is always a hard question but I would call it the doom and gloom chords of Elliot Smith and Neil Young mixed with the occasional irreverent, optimistic beauty of the Flaming Lips (I mean this guy makes his own instruments how could I not compare the two) all put into a blender called Sonic Youth (The occasional irony invites the comparison). It’s been two weeks and I am still trying to fully fathom the experience.Doesn’t the girl in that fucking babysitter slasher movie seem like the worst actress since Chiaro.
